If you are a full-time or part-time piano service professional with an interest in

then PTG membership is for you.

Membership includes such benefits as a subscription to the PTG's monthly magazine (Piano Technicians Journal), group insurance rates, reduced rates on technical seminars, educational materials, and business building aids.

While all of these are good reasons for joining the PTG, many members feel that the best part of membership is their association with their fellow chapter members. Most PTG members are more than willing to share their knowledge with other members in the belief that by helping each other we elevate our profession.

The Maine Chapter holds meetings at irregular intervals during the year in various locations around the state. Each meeting consists of a review of chapter business followed by a technical presentation or discussion.

Contact Maine Chapter President Gordon Large, RPT to find out more about chapter membership, or to let him know you would like to attend a meeting.

Setting the Standard

In nearly every trade or profession — lawyer, doctor, plumber, electrician, barber … even dog groomer — a license is required before an individual is permitted to offer services to the public.

But this is not the case with piano tuning. Currently no U.S. state requires licensing of piano tuners.

The question then becomes, absent a licensing procedure, how can a piano owner be assured of competent piano service?

The Piano Technicians Guild is a non-profit association of piano tuners and technicians with members throughout the United States and Canada.

The PTG is the only organization conducting standardized testing of piano tuners. As such the PTG has two main functions:

When you hire a Registered Piano Technician (RPT) to service your piano, you can rest assured that the person who shows up at your door has submitted his or her skills to peer review and has met or exceeded competency standards established by the Guild.
